Storytime Concerts is a standards-based, educational program developed by Chamber Music Society of Greater Denver founder Laura Schulkind. In 2024, Schulkind reimagined her children’s programming to focus on hybrid, interactive experiences that connect classical and folk music with children’s literature. These programs pair live musical performance with storytelling to create engaging, multisensory learning opportunities for young audiences.
Each program integrates carefully selected musical works with beloved children’s books—for example, Camille Saint-Saëns’ Carnival of the Animals (arranged for two flutes) presented alongside Never Play Music Right Next to the Zoo by John Lithgow. Through this creative pairing, students experience music not only as a performance but as part of a broader narrative and imaginative journey.
Storytime Concerts also emphasize collaboration with classroom teachers and librarians. When possible, CMSGD works with educators to support curriculum connections tailored to the needs of individual classrooms and learning environments.
By redesigning these programs as turnkey performances, CMSGD delivers high-quality arts experiences that integrate easily with parents’ and school schedules. The result is a flexible program model that maintains strong artistic and educational impact while remaining accessible to a wide range of learning settings.
Designed for both schools and libraries, Storytime Concerts allow CMSGD to remain responsive and adaptable in bringing engaging, high-quality music education to young audiences throughout the community.
CMSGD seeks funding to help underwrite costs for presenting workshops in Colorado’s underserved and rural areas at no charge to participating schools, as well as the development of a research-based assessment tool to evaluate effective learning through teacher-driven data collection.
